History of

Valentine's Day on February 14, 2006

The origins of Valentine's Day trace back to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia. Held on February 15, Lupercalia honored the gods Lupercus and Faunus, as well as the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus.

In addition to a bountiful feast, Lupercalia festivities are purported to have included the pairing of young women and men.Men would draw women's names from a box, and each couple would be paired until next year's celebration.

While this pairing of couples set the tone for today's holiday, it wasn't called "Valentine's Day" until a priest named Valentine came along.Valentine, a romantic at heart, disobeyed Emperor Claudius II's decree that soldiers remain bachelors.Claudius handed down this decree believing that soldiers would be distracted and unable to concentrate on fighting if they were married or engaged. Valentine defied the emperor and secretly performed marriage ceremonies. As a result of his defiance, Valentine was put to death on February 14.

After Valentine's death, he was named a saint. AsChristianity spread through Rome,the priests moved Lupercalia from February 15 to February 14 and renamed it St. Valentine's Day to honor Saint Valentine.

Old Friend

You've been such a big part of my life for so long now.

Wheather we've been side by side or miles apart.

We've been somehow managedto stay as close as friends can be.

Anytime I've neededa mood lightened,

a secret kept, help offered,advice given,

a story shared,a memory relived,

a success celebrated,(pretty much anything.)

I've always known I could count on you.

When I think of good time we shared,

it makes me smiles remembering them all

and makes me so glad to knowthere'll be many more ahead of us.

I'm always happywhen new friends come into my life.

But old friends are always the best friends.

festival in Thailand

Loi Krathong and Candle Festival
Sukhothais Loi Krathong is held annually on the full moon night of the 12th lunar month at the Sukhothai Historical Park. Activities during the festival include krathong floating, a fireworks display, and local games and performances amid the glamorous atmosphere of the Sukhothai Historical Park.

Si Satchanalai Ordination Celebration
Called by Thais as Buat Chang Hat Siao, this local event is held annually during 7-8 April at Ban Hat Siao, Amphoe Si Satchanalai. It features a spectacular procession of ordination candidates in colourful costumes on the backs of some 20-30 decorated elephants. The ceremony has been arranged by Thai Phuan, the citizens of Ban Hat Siao for more than 150 years.

Songkran Festival
This is an annual celebration of the Thai New Year, 13 April. The festival was mentioned in the famous stone inscription believed to be inscribed during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great of the Sukhothai Kingdom.
